Understanding that although Reading for Orders has been a mainstay of theological education within the traditional Anglican movement it is a temporary solution to a longstanding problem. Namely, how do we train our men for Holy Orders? We realize that although Reading for Orders provides a comprehensive knowledge of our tradition there is much to be said for Academics and Collegiality, especially for the breadth of knowledge provided by a varied faculty, discussion, debate, the sharing of ideas, and sermon critiques. To this end, we have collected information from many who have found acceptable options. We are certain that when supplemented by classic Anglican texts and with on-sight training from an experienced Anglican clergyman, the schools listed below, if utilized, will help return our ministers to the respected level of education long attributed to the Anglican Church. Each school qualifies at least one of the following criteria.
- Respected Anglican clergymen have studied at the school and feel that they received a good education, were respected, valued, and encouraged in their Anglicanism.
- Traditional Anglicans are presently on faculty.
- We are fairly certain that Anglicans will receive an academic education and will be respected, valued, and encouraged in their Anglicanism.
It is satisfying to see that all the regions of the United States have at least one school and that nearly every school has local Anglican congregations no doubt looking forward to welcoming a new Anglican seminarian into their midst! As always we appreciate feedback from the Faithful.
*As helpful as this list will prove, it is still the case that theological education of a postulant is to be decided with the assistance and approval of the postulent's bishop.
