South Carolina
Columbia: At the Pro-Cathedral of the Epiphany on June 18, Bishop Paul Hewett blessed the new steeple given to the glory of God in loving memory of Arthur Colby Sprague, "a church member who was a Harvard-educated Shakespearean scholar. 'My husband particularly wanted us to have it and left the money,' said Rosamond Sprague, a USC philosophy professor and Sprague's widow. Years passed, she said, and the church never got around to putting up the steeple, even though a pen-and-ink postcard of the church shows one. In 2003, smoke from a kitchen fire heavily damaged the church and renovations took priority, said Deacon Lee Herbert. Once the church determined it was time to erect a steeple, Herbert set out to find a company to build one. The 48-foot steeple, adorned with a four-foot tall gold cross, was built by Kivett Inc. of Clinton, NC, [and]...is made of treated wooden beams and covered with fiberglass" (from an article in The State by Carolyn Click). Also on this day, Randy Headley and Ann Hubbard were confirmed.
