News of the Diocese....

FORTNIGHTLY
December 2, 2006

Clericuses have now been held in Rosemont, PA (September-December), Colorado Springs, CO (August) and Spartanburg, SC (November). The clericuses include orthodox Anglican clergy from various jurisdictions, and so they foster local cooperation. They can of course be held again, and held in increasing numbers of places.

Church School Curricula -- To open up the subject, here are some possibilities. The Teal Curriculum has a version for use with the 1928 Book of Common Prayer. See what comes up with a search for "Teal Curriculum." David C. Cook has excellent material for Bible study for all ages. E.T.W. Branscombe's Heavenward Bound, a child's book fo the Catholic Religion (with superb pen and ink drawings), was last published by Dacre in 1958. It may be possible to get a used copy from amazon.com. The American Church Union publishes a curriculum that connects with the Sunday propers and can be accessed by going to the Anglican Province of Christ the King's website. The "Christ Our Life Series" by the Sisters of Notre Dame of Chardon, Ohio (published by Loyola University Press, Chicago, IL 60657) is well illustrated and worth having a look at. St. Vladimir's Press offers children's books that look quite interesting.

In preparing young people for confirmation, The Ways and Teachings of the Church has been used and may still be in print. Some adult confirmation classes have used Venon Staley's The Catholic Religion. Try the Anglican Parishes Association in Athens, GA, for both these texts. Archbishop Mark Haverland's Anglican Catholic Faith and Practice is published by the Anglican Parishes Association. The ACU's Confirmation Manual is very useful for young people and can be accessed on the PCK's website.

If you know of good texts and curricula, please write afdv1@yahoo.com.

The Protecting Veil -- Mary's Protecting Veil is a recurring theme in art and music. There is a medieval polychrome statue of Our Lady in a German cathedral. She has a veil over her head which extends to the ground. From the edges of the veil, on both sides, from Mary's shoulders to the ground are faces of people, diminished in size, peeking out. John Tavener (b.1944) picks up on this theme with his musical piece, 'The Protecting Veil," the Veil extended over the Church. One can hear in the music whenever the Veil is torn that Mary is mending it. As today's assaults upon the Church tear Our Lady's Protecting Veil, our Diocese is to be on hand to help her mend the rends we can reach.
