Two momentous festivals – in Mayesville, South Carolina, on February 6, the Octave Day of the Feast of St. Charles the Martyr was observed in the Chapel of that name with a Pontifical High Mass and Benediction celebrated by the Rt. Rev. Keith L. Ackerman, SSC, Episcopal Patron of the Society of King Charles the Martyr. During the elevations of the Host and Chalice, canons were fired in the churchyard in lieu of Sanctus Bells. After the Liturgy, Bishop Ackerman consecrated a Chapel for Confederate soldiers, and the Congregation retired to the home of our hosts, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hines, of Mayesville, for a reception and lunch.

In Stateburg, South Carolina, on February 14, at 3:00 p.m., the Bishop of South Carolina, the Rt. Rev. Mark Lawrence, rededicated the Church of the Holy Cross in the presence of many clergy and hundreds of parishioners, friends and neighbors. The Rector, the Rev. Thomas W. Allen, told how the present church was built in 1852 of rammed earth and that, through anonymous donations, the entire structure has just been restored. It sits, as a gem, on its corner, 2 miles west of Shaw Air Force base, and 25 miles east of Columbia.

Chambers of Commerce – Yesterday the Church of the Epiphany, Columbia, SC, joined the local Chamber of Commerce. The Church of the Transfiguration, Phoenixville, PA, is also a member of its local Chamber. Membership is a good way to connect with the business community, and in many cases, have access to outstanding, economical group health insurance for the clergy and their families.

Recommended music – The St. Paul's Service and other music by Herbert Howells (1892-1983) on Hyperion CDD22038, especially the fourth track, the Jubilate from the “Collegium Regale.” Howells is a great composer, teacher and organist in the “Second English Renaissance” of the 20 th century.
